A CMS (Content Management System) is a platform which allows you to administer in a simple and quick way all the content the users who access your website will see.
There are several open source softwares which admit this. The more known and solid are Drupal and WordPress. For E-Commrce, we can find Prestashop o Magento, for example. There are also pre-formatted systems to make forums, blogs, etc.
The main feature of a CMS is that from a template and plugins, modules or extensions, you can have a professional website which can be adapted to your needs easily.
However, not everything is bright. The CMS also have some disadvantages. Although it’s true theses systems allow you to manage almost everything –including menus, pages, colors, etc.-, it is also true that you have to adapt your website to a certain structure the template gives you and with the limited variety of colors, typographies and possibilities.
Examples of websites built with CMS
Drupal:
The well-known car brand, Tesla
WordPress:
The United States White House website
The well-known car brand, Mercedes Benz
Online Stores with Woocommerce (the main WordPress plugin for E-commerce)
Magento online stores:
These were just some examples of what you can do with content management systems. It depends on what you desire and your knowledge to choose one or another.
Take into account that a CMS is a good option to start if you don’t have a considerable amount of money or time to start. But the custom software is always the best choice as it allows you to have all the functionalities and design you want to be the owner of a unique website specially built for you
